Now this depresses me…or at least it would normally.
Here goes another bash at talking about work without mentioning it’s name, location or staff.
It seems that yet another person is setting up an online discussion forum for the folks I work with. To my knowledge, this is the forth such attempt and I suspect this will fail like all the others.
Generally speaking forums are cool, after all I have had one for almost 7 years now. So why does mine work and I suspect this one won’t? Because mine is full of mostly HAPPY people talking about INTERESTING and FUN things. I suspect the work one will not.
The work one has already posted it’s first pointless, antagonistic, overly dramatic piece of crap - see, its made me cross already. I will spare you the details but it is another “management-is-evil” thing.
You see, I am sometimes evil management and sometimes I serve “in the trenches”. Whatever particular slot I fill at any one time, I am lucky enough to see my workplace for what it is. Both sides of the coin are a lot more alike than my forum-starting friend would probably appreciate. It makes it easier to be angry and indignant if you ignore this fact, but an informed arguement is so much stronger. Posing as a ficticous little avatar on an anonymous forum and complaining about things is about as unconstructive as its possible to get. It will just get you angrier and those who read it angrier too. With 1000 or so people potentially interested in it’s contents, finding 25 or so people willing to post tosh daily shouldn’t be too hard. The first post bemoans the excessive and hippocritical costs of a recent management training excursion. The facts used to highlight this supposed abomination are incorrect and ill informed. Even if accurate, the amount of money quoted is amazingly good value for training a group of people that size. A quick Google will confirm this.
The lengths my employer went to to reduce travelling costs are quite extensive and certainly reduced the whole trip from a jolly few days away to something quite different. There is no hotel involved and virtually no expenses. It involved Sunday travel for which very little financial compensation was offered.
Surely all training for managers will only make them better at their jobs?
Why not instead vent our frustrations by looking around us at work and suggesting that the amount of money supposedly wasted by the above training (and probably a lot more) is wasted every day by those of us who perhaps don’t do our jobs as well as we should, those of us who are late or even those of us who decide not to come to work because they don’t feel like it and happily accept sick pay.
Bitching. It’s so easy. I feel so empowered.

Mate .. we have a discussion forum at work. It used to be anonymous (like it really was on work computers???) but now you have to register. The input has cut to a trickle and there is now very little actual discussion. Our management were /are not above commenting on the forum and offering their oppinions on it. However I do not believe there were many in management who actually took on board things which were posted.
“Bitchfest” work forums only work if all sides are honest. Sounds like the one for your lot will go the same way as previous ones.
