Management Course - Day Three
Nope.
9pm-5pm is still not right.
Sitting here in the evening and blogging. How weird is that?
Last night I was watching TV and was momentarily confused by the fact that I couldn’t fast forward through the adverts. For the first time in ages, I wasn’t watching Bargain Hunt on the Sky Plus. It was actually “live”. Luckily, I was quite keen to play bingo, consolidate my bills, secure a huge loan on my house and sue the ass of my employer because I was too stupid not to step over the bucket of soapy water in reception.
Today was even stranger than those that went before.
Today we were back at my usual workplace, something I find quite disturbing. Being at work at unusual times that is.
Do any of you remember what it was like when you went back to Old Boys weekend after a fairly longish gap? When you suddenly realise that no-one there was there when you were? Didn’t you have a barely controllable urge to tell them all to get out of your school?
Well, on the few occasions I have been back to work either hours before or hours after my normal shift, I have always hated seeing other people there. Even worse is to see someone objectionable sat in the seat you sit in between 2pm and 10pm. Bugger off smelly and get your ass out of my seat. It’s horrible. It really is.
So anyway, what did we do today?
Firstly, a short quiz on the subjects covered yesterday. I came last with 12 out of 20. All the women did better than me. Lateral thinkers the lot of them. In particular one “friend” of mine has an incredible ability to remember everything she hears. She has yet to be photographed and is more vociferous in her refusal to let me. This only makes the job more fun. Watch this space.
Next a group discussion/heated debate/blazing row about return-to-work interviews. Once again, the differences between shifts was shocking. If nothing else comes out of this whole affair, consistency should addressed before the last easter egg is eaten.
The highlight of the day was our presentations. Myself and the only other bloke on the course gave the room a good seeing to regarding appropriate use of spreadsheets to collate statistical information. Now, those of you who know me well will be able to imagine the scene. We were superb. I don’t care if they were bored and unimpressed.
After lunch, which amazingly for me actually took place somewhere near the middle of the day, we sat through two presentations by existing managers. One about reporting systems and another about ULDs (Upper Limb Disorders). Obviously RSI and the like are big problems in our line of work and this guy has put in a serious amount of work into researching the statistics, causes and solutions.
Then home.
Nope.
9am-5pm still feels wrong.
Normally I can’t get to sleep until about 1am. It’s 8.48pm and I can barely keep my eyes open.
Tata

Mate the working day is strange. After 12 years of shift work it was very strange to work mainly days (or at least no night shifts). Now I wouldn’t go back if I was paid twice the money.
