Coming home … but football isnt..

The Depressed Minority
Why is it that, despite upwards of 22 million people watching the footy, everyone I meet doesn’t seem to care about it? As a leading member of the “major championship” club, I will not put away my ill-fitting England strip, my hat and even my whistle until 2008 when we all get fired up again. Of course, the regular footy fans will now move on and get fueled up for the start of the season in a few weeks time and I will cease to care.

Frank Skinner and David Baddiel on their excellent World Cup Podcast noted that Michael Owen’s statement after his injury that he would now go back and prepare for next season with Newcastle was a bit like seeing a “back to school sale” at BHS half way through July and I know what they mean. How do you go back and get excited about club football after all this? I guess you must manage it somehow.

So we lost. I lost the sweepstake prize and my colleagues at work who support Plymouth Argyle can claim footy back from the fair-weather fans like myself.

As for the game. Well it was probably the most tense sporting event I have ever watched. I turned over during the penalties as I just could not stand it.

The BBC pundits got it dead right, even the man Lineker’s expression at the end.

Then came the obligatory montage of events overlaid with one of my current favourite songs - Numb by The Pet Shop Boys. Now it will always be associated with bad boy Rooney getting sent off.

How bizarre is that?

Hi Hx.

Bye All.

Club footy is more passionate than watching England, I and many others I know are Club Supporters First and England supporters second.

The excitement you felt yesterday, I feel every week watching my club. I love England and want them of course to win but it niggles me to cheer on guys who I routinely slag off week in week out, therefore club before country.

Neil, Pick a club side and start to follow them, the highs and lows are great. And experience that World Cup Fever every week..

  2. I’m dutch and I had two times the bad feeling with the portugees at this World Cup. We did support England also. Watch my site. I’m a seasonticketholder at Ajax. And yes the comming season is most important now. You should try Amsterdam Footbal every fourtnight. You will enjoy! Greetings from Holland.
